FIRE-RESCUE COMPETITION
This year Firehouse Expo is offering firefighters the opportunity to compete in the inaugural Fire-Rescue Competition. The competition will consist of five-person teams competing in 10 timed events run in succession to simulate a realistic fireground scenario. This year's event, which will simulate a firefighter mayday involving a downed firefighter that will require each team to perform a relay rescue operation to search, locate and extract the downed firefighter. The three teams with the fastest, most efficient times will move on to the finals, which be held on the exhibit floor, on Saturday, July 18.
The 10 timed events include
1. Command and Control Operations
2. Personnel Accountability and Reporting
3. Fireground Communications
4. Forcible Entry Techniques
5. Navigating a Diminishing Clearance Obstacle
6. Overcoming Entanglement Hazards
7. Up and Over - Lifts and Carries
8. Wall Breach
9. Victim Search, Packaging and Removal
10. Restricted Opening Rescue and Removal Operations
The goal of this competition is to provide an opportunity for firefighters from around the country to showcase their skills in a competitive venue, with a formalized grading criteria and realistic time constraints. The skills required to successfully complete the assigned tasks replicate those commonly performed during a normal firefighting or rescue operation. The team that performs the assigned tasks in the safest and most efficient time will ultimately be crowned the event champions.
Each team shall consist of a four-person rescue group with one additional member serving as the incident commander. In the preliminary skills session (Round No. 1), a two-person rapid intervention team will force entry into the course, conduct a rapid search operation to locate the downed firefighter, perform a standard downed firefighter assessment and begin packaging the downed firefighter for removal. The second two-person RIT will only be allowed to make entry after the initial RIT rescue team has provided a radio report to the IC confirming the condition and location of the downed firefighter. Upon confirmation from the IC, the second RIT will enter and remove the downed firefighter to complete the evolution.
