MVA with Entrapment in California

By By Deputy Fire Chief Steve Stockwell
October 7, 2016

On October 7th, 2016 at approximately 3:20pm members of Bay District responded to the report of a MVA with injuries. E-91 (Sgt. Thompson), SQ-3 (DC Stockwell), SAFETY-3 (Eno) and CAPT-3 (Burroughs) responded to the scene. Upon the arrival of one of the medical units, the subjects were reported to be entrapped within the vehicle. Now what that means is that usually the patients are injured with no way out of the vehicle. In some cases this could be as simple as using our hydraulic tools to open the doors or completely remove them. Along with that and in some cases the injuries could be severe or life threatening. E-91 and CAPT-3 arrived on scene confirming entrapment and CAPT-3 assumed the Command of the incident. SQ-3 arrived a few short minutes later and both crews worked to stabilize the vehicle from moving, and remove the door (and passengers) door so that "we" providers could gain access to the patient, provide care and remove them from the vehicle. Overall time from extrication to removal was no more than 15 minutes and crews worked fast to remove them from the vehicle. The Lexington Park Rescue Squad provided care and transported both, due to the injuries to the Hangar for a fly-out to our local trauma center. Command was terminated and both units returned to service shortly thereafter.

Units: E-91, SQ-3, CAPT-3

Mutual Aid: LPVRS, MSP, MSP Trooper 6 and SMCSO
