SMVFA Mourns the Passing of Past President John O. Gatton, Sr.

The Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association regrets to announce the passing of Past President John Oscar Gatton, Sr., who passed away on May 19, 2026. Past President Gatton was born on February 10, 1943, and his decades of service and leadership left a lasting impact on the volunteer fire service throughout Southern Maryland.

 

Past President Gatton was a respected member of the fire service community and will be remembered for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to supporting the men and women who serve their neighbors through the volunteer fire and rescue service. His contributions to the Association and to the broader public safety community reflect a lifetime of service and devotion.

The Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association extends its sincere condolences to the Gatton family, friends, fellow firefighters, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.
