• Prince Frederick, MD – Just a few days after being seriously injured in an accident in the line of duty, two Dunkirk volunteer firefighters appear ready to resume their service. The volunteers—Marty Sealey and John Faulkner Jr. were part of a group accepting a plaque Tuesday, March 21 on behalf of the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department (Company 5) from the Calvert County Commissioners. The presentation had been scheduled well in advance of the incident that occurred Saturday morning, March 18. The tanker truck that Sealey was operating and in which Faulkner was a passenger, overturned while en route to a house fire in Huntingtown.
• According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, the agency’s preliminary investigation revealed that as the tanker truck was traveling on Robinson Road, a tire failure with a blowout and full tread separation occurred. The incident remains under investigation. The tanker was carrying a full load of water, approximately 3,000 gallons, when the crash occurred.
• Sealy and Faulkner, who are lieutenants with Company 5, both sustained serious injuries and were flown to MedStar in Washington, DC. Both were released several hours later.
• “It’s been very powerful,” said Company 5 Chief Bill Rector of the community support the fire company received Saturday in the wake of the tanker accident. “We can replace the fire truck. We can’t replace them [Sealey and Faulkner].”
• “We are very glad to have Marty and John with us today,” said Commissioners’ President Tom Hejl [R – At large].
• “I’m kind of at a loss for words,” said Sealey. “I will volunteer in this county as long as I can. I love you guys.”
