Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced that the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $247,230 in federal grant funds through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The funding will be used to improve operations and safety.

"The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department does an outstanding job protecting our community," stated Congressman Hoyer. "Thanks to this investment, the Department will have additional resources needed to improve operations and keep their firefighters safe. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Caucus, I was proud to help establish the AFG Program, and I'm pleased the program is helping firefighters in the Fifth District and across the country better serve our communities and do their jobs safely."

AFG funding is awarded to fire departments and EMS organizations to enhance their response capabilities and more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel. Since 2001, AFG has provided nearly $6 billion in assistance to first-responder organizations to obtain emergency response equipment, protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
