July 3, 2025

Calvert County Volunteer Fire-Rescue-EMS proudly celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of three exemplary young members who represented our county with distinction at the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, held June 23–27 in Atlanta, Georgia.

This premier national event showcases America’s most talented career and technical education students, with thousands competing across more than 100 skilled and leadership categories. Among the elite competitors, Oliver Fox of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department earned a silver medal in the Firefighting Skills competition, placing second nationally out of 30 top contenders. His performance demonstrated exceptional technical proficiency, composure, and a deep commitment to the firefighting profession—an outstanding reflection of the caliber of training and dedication among our local volunteers.

Also representing Calvert County with distinction, EMT students Matt Kaiser and Ryan King placed among the Top 15 in the highly competitive Emergency Medical Technician category. Their success highlights their strong clinical knowledge, rapid decision-making, and ability to work seamlessly as a team under pressure—core qualities essential to the EMS profession.

The SkillsUSA National Conference is not only a competition but a vital proving ground where students apply real-world skills honed through rigorous career and technical education programs. Each contest is judged by industry professionals, ensuring participants meet the high standards demanded in the public safety and emergency response fields. For Oliver, Matt, and Ryan, these achievements directly reflect their preparedness to deliver life-saving services to the citizens of Calvert County.

These outstanding accomplishments were made possible through the unwavering support of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the Calvert County Career & Technology Academy. Their investment in mentorship, training, and leadership development has been instrumental in preparing these future first responders for excellence. Special recognition is extended to instructors Marquis Smith and Dave Barcenas for their exceptional guidance and dedication to student success.

This success story is a powerful example of what can be achieved through strong community collaboration and a shared commitment to excellence in public safety education. The entire Calvert County Volunteer Fire-Rescue-EMS community joins in applauding Oliver, Matt, and Ryan for their exemplary achievements and for serving as a beacon of dedication, skill, and service for the next generation of first responders.
