By Thomas A. Mattingly, Jr., President
January 10, 2026

The Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association regrets with deep sorrow to announce the passing of Past President George F. Hayden. George was a Past Chief and President of the Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department and was also a Charter member, Past President and Past Fire Chief of the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department. George served in many roles within the SMVFA, his county association and his home departments. George will be sorely missed. We thank him for his years of service and dedication to Southern Maryland throughout his life. Our Deepest Thoughts and Prayers are with his family, friends and the members of both the Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department and the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department.

Rest In Peace George.

When arrangements have been made, we will make sure to share with you all.
