Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department announced on Tuesday evening that firefighter James Hildwine, who was injured while fighting a weekend fire, has been released from the hospital. Dylan Smith, who was also injured in the fire, is still at Med Star and the release said it is not known when he will be released.
Smith and Hildwine were two of nine firefighters injured while fighting a fire at a Huntingtown home that was started by a chimney fire. The firefighters, some of whom were from Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and some from Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, were hurt when a "flash over" occurred, meaning that "it gets hot enough that everything combusts at one time," according to Deputy State Fire Marshal K.H. Travers.
The release from Huntingtown VFD said the department's leadership would like to thank everyone who has helped the last few days. "From local businesses, the community, fire service members across the world, local, state, federal and national politicians, the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation, the media, the dispatchers that night (Chris, Heather, Vickie, Tim and Joy), your support has not gone unnoticed," states the release, which was signed by Chief Jon Riffe. Financial donations are being forwarded to the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation, PO Box 4565, Washington, DC 20017. "This organization has provided assistance and support to our injured firefighters – and their family members – throughout their continued stay at the Washington Hospital Center," the release states.
